Ep. 88: Can You Work with Friends?

If you've ever done a group project with friends for school or even if you've tried to plan going out with a group of friends with different types of personalities and schedules, etc., then you know that it can be a struggle to work with friends.

What about working. with. friends? Like, in a career?

In this episode of the Pretty Rich Podcast, my best friend of 25 years, Julie Barnett (no, seriously, you guys. We've been friends since we were like 11), and I talk about what it's like working with friends and if it's doable.

I'd like to start off by saying, yeah, I definitely think it's doable. I think you can work with friends.

And just like Julie and I talk about in this episode, that statement comes with a couple of conditions.

It really depends on the friend.

It also really depends on the job.

Side Note: did you know Julie edits the Pretty Rich Podcast? She's amazing!

How did we make it work? Or why does this work?

I have to say, it hasn't always worked, but between us, we have worked it out.

I have lost friends that I've hired.

I have hired "stray puppies," people that I didn't know personally, because it really used to be my thing. But for me, that always turned out badly.

When you're in an entrepreneurship, hiring for the longterm, it really matters who you have on your team.

It takes major thought and consideration.

So, if you've been wondering whether or not you can (or SHOULD) hire your friends, let me tell you, babe, you've come to the right place!

Listen in!

Here are the episode highlights:

‣‣  [03:53]  Families fight. That's the truth. When you're building your staff, people that you work with for hours a day every dang day, you're basically building a family. How to spot whether it's a family-type conflict or just a bad one can be found here.

‣‣  [05:32]  Julie and I had a rocky start when working together. Us?! Yeah, us. We talk about that here.

‣‣  [08:16]  Here's where Julie talks about why you lose people, either in the workplace as friends or even just as friends generally.

‣‣  [08:36]  Julie and I unpack what that business relationship dynamic is like when you're friends before working together at this minute mark.

‣‣  [10:38]  Right here! Here is where we talk about the standard of working with someone, why you should have standards when hiring friends, and what kind of standards they should be.

‣‣  [11:31]  Here's a quick Instagram tip from me! (No hints, just listen. *wink*)

‣‣  [17:50]  Hiring friends is like a lifetime commitment. Whether or not your friend stays working with you, you're still there for each other, even if/when they leave! Here's where Julie and I unpack that truth even further.

‣‣  [23:13]  Julie talks about how having the same mindset/goals as your friend helps you in working together at this minute mark.

‣‣  [24:00]  Money reveals. For anybody, a stranger or a friend, when money's involved, honest-to-God truths are revealed. Those truths can be bad, or they can be really, really good. Julie and I talk about that here.
