Ep. 92: Fears, Truths, and Ideas with Amanda Rose of @HYVEBeauty

Our time in lockdown has taught us many things.

Leaders and business owners have really started to come together in a dark and uncertain time and we're witnessing great connections knitting together our community.

In this podcast, I replay a live I did with Amanda Rose of HYVE Beauty. She did this amazing thing where she brought together leaders and influencers of the permanent makeup industry and had them on her Instagram story to share their vulnerable moments with each other.

The idea was that each guest would share one fear, one truth, and one idea. It was a great experience and I'm so happy I get to share it with you today.

Here are the episode highlights:

‣‣  [14:07]  I start off with sharing my one fear with you. We talk about my mom and hustle culture.

‣‣  [16:15]  Do you feel like lockdown and Coronavirus have made you more aware of yourself and your habits?

‣‣  [17:45]  Here I talk about one of the key things I've learned as a result of this global pandemic: pettiness is not an option.

‣‣  [20:12]  Amanda and I dive into Dare To Lead by Brene Brown and How To Have Impossible Conversations by James Lindsay and Peter Boghossian, how they have changed our perspectives, and how they could change yours too!

‣‣  [21:44]  I share my ideas on finding you magic and making a business of it.

‣‣  [23:27]  Amanda shares an important reminder that what you do right now really matters to your clients and will impact your future.

Sheila Bella:

Hey, you guys at the time of this recording, it is April 3rd, Friday, and we are on Coronavirus lockdown and everybody's depressed. The whole beauty industry is depressed, but babe, what if you made it big? I can see you on Oprah's couch in the future. Not right now, in the future. And you're chatting with her about how you made it big. And it all started with the Coronavirus recession, how you had to build a business from your living room because your salon was forced to close. And how, from there, you created a phenomenally successful something else. Something else.

Think outside the box, amidst a global pandemic. What if? What if? It's possible. Maybe this fall will be your catalyst to think outside the box and finally give you the time to pursue that thing that you've always wanted to pursue, but never had the time for. So, serve while others are delaying. Focus while others are distracted. Save while others are spending. Study while others are daydreaming. Inspire while others are too afraid. Keep going while others press pause, and pivot now while others stay in denial. Leaders, don't be afraid to shine in a dark, dark world that needs more light than ever. We need you.

Welcome to the Pretty Rich Podcast where you are totally the heroine of your own story. I'm your host, Sheila Bella, and I built a seven-figure beauty biz without a degree, without a fancy website or a sugar daddy. And if we hang out on here long enough, you're going to start to believe that you can do it too, because you can. What I know for sure is that if your perfect job doesn't exist, you can create it. So consider me your secret beauty biz BFF. In case you need to be reminded that power is never given to you, you just have to take it. Yes, it's scary, I know, but we're all in this journey together. So let's get real and have the talk about what it takes to create a life that's pretty rich in love, beauty, faith, wellness, and financial wealth. You ready, babe? Let's dive in.

Hello friends. Happy Quarantine Friday. Oh, it's not funny. It's actually not funny. It's so weird. I'm delirious. I'm delirious. If you're with me, high five. Today, we're going to talk about one fear, one truth, and one idea. And I'm actually going to be replaying a live that I did with Amanda Rose from High Beauty. What she did was really cool. She had all these permanent makeup thought leaders and influencers basically come together on her Instagram one at a time and be vulnerable. It was really, really awesome.

But before we get to the meat and potatoes of today's episode, I first of all just want to give you guys a real virtual hug because yeah, things are insane right now. Right? I am just so grateful for the internet because these connections to me feel so real. I feel like I have connections with people on a real human level as if I've met them in-person and then I realize I've never met them in-person. I have colleagues that I've gotten to know over social media and through Skype and Zoom and phone calls and texts. And it feels super real because it is real. The real unsung hero in this whole thing, I think is the internet. So let's give the internet right now, our digital friend that's working overtime, a round of applause for keeping us connected, right? Because being apart doesn't have to mean disconnected.

Okay, I am going to read the review of the week. Short and sweet, short and sweet. And thank you guys for leaving these reviews. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Because it really does help this show rank. And it's a quick and easy way for you guys to show your appreciation to me because I do read every single one of them. And I truly, truly appreciate them because this show, it takes a lot of time to produce, but I want to keep giving value to you guys. So if you guys take a minute to leave me a five star review on iTunes, please do that. And actually, if you have any business questions, you can also leave it there.

Today's review is from [OhdatStudio 00:05:13]. Ohdatstudio. Oh okay. I get it. OhdatStudio, she says, "So inspiring. This podcast is exactly what I needed as a salon owner/leader." That's right, girl, you are more than just an owner. You are a leader. And I just want to thank you for taking the time to leave me a review.

So right now, during this COVID-19 crisis, the most important thing is adaptability. The ones who accept things quicker and pivot quicker and adapt faster are the ones that are going to survive this whole thing. So if you're done being a victim of this crisis and you're ready to lead and do something about it, I want to invite you to join me in my online course workshop, make money from home. That's the option we have right now. What if this is the catalyst you've been waiting for to finally create what you wish existed? To build what you needed 10 years ago? What if you could turn this mess into your magic? My online course workshop is launching on April 14th, meaning we start on April 14th, but you can enroll as early as now. And basically I'm going to walk your hand through creating, developing, launching, and scaling an online course.

If you have no course experience or teaching experience, don't worry about it. Come. I've made it super affordable too. It's half off right now with the code "in this together," you get 50% off. So it comes out to about almost $80. Not even quite. It comes with four live calls, four live calls where you and I in a group are going to sit down and develop some ideas for what you want for your online course. The goal of this course is to teach you what I do from home without a big budget. I'm an artist turned online entrepreneur, and I know, I'm so confident that I can help you do the same thing because I am you. I am you. I'm actually not too affected by this pandemic because I make money online. And how many times have you heard people say, "It's important to have different streams of income?"

I'm so glad I launched my online platform a few years ago. Not knowing that this pandemic was going to happen, how to only relied on my brick and mortar, which is a seven figure studio, I would be in a much worse position. So I want the same security for you in case this happens again. You never know. I wasn't going to launch this course yet, but because of the current situation, I was like, "I got to launch it now because I really think that my tribe needs this type of training needs something like this and needs it affordably." So I'm happy to give it for pretty much what it costs me to read everything. And I would hope that you join me, just go to sheilabella.com/onlinecourseworkshop. And now without further ado, here is my live session with Amanda Rose from High Beauty.

Amanda Rose:

I'm more just going to be chatting about what our one truth or fear is. And those things could be the same or they could be different depending on the person. And then the one idea. So the one thing that whoever I'm talking to, once you guys to know, to help you move forward. So an idea that will help you emotionally, physically, financially, psychologically, technically with your skills. It's all so, so important. And I think, you know what is more contagious than fear? And let's talk about the contagion of fear right now. To me, a more contagious feeling is hope. And I know this to be true in myself. And that is the biggest reason why I'm doing these lives to keep connected with you guys to strengthen the bonds. I don't know what you guys think, but right now I feel like our community is really being knit together in such a beautiful way. It just, it makes my little heart want to explode. So guys, one truth, one fear, one idea. And I'm going to get our first interviewee up. And that's Ms. Sheila Bella. I don't even know if she needs an introduction, but Sheila Bella is a dear friend of mine. I look up to her for so, so many reasons. I can't say enough about her, but I'm going to let Sheila join me right now and then we'll get chatting.

All right, Ms. Sheila Bella, Sheila, Sheila. This is so exciting. I've never done a live with Sheila before. This is so exciting.

Sheila Bella:

Hello?

Amanda Rose:

Hello.

Sheila Bella:

Is this the TV? Is the TV on?

Amanda Rose:

Would you like to be part of my live today?

Sheila Bella:

I'm talking like my parents. Hello? Am I on TV?

Amanda Rose:

Oh my goodness. Hey girlfriend. Hey, look, look.

Sheila Bella:

Wow.

Amanda Rose:

I know right?

Sheila Bella:

You look amazeballs USA.

Amanda Rose:

Magnetic lashes are God's gift to the universe right now. I'm just going to say that.

Sheila Bella:

I can't get them to work. I don't know.

Amanda Rose:

You know what, I'm going to send you some, going to send you some down. I didn't think I'd get them to work either. There's a trick. And now, so here's the thing. I watched Anita throw these things on her face last week. It was two seconds of worry. And then I watched Violet do it an hour ago. And again, she's like... And I was like, "How did they make it look so easy?"

Sheila Bella:

Okay. Okay. All right. I mean, the strip lashes with the glue is easy for me, but I don't know. I feel like I got bug guys, because my eyes are so big. So, I don't know if they'd... I need custom.

Amanda Rose:

I feel like you and I, we might have the same issue because I see pictures of me and I'm like...

Sheila Bella:

It's like those pit bulls, the eyeballs.

Amanda Rose:

Yeah. It's like your eyeballs are going to fall out of your head. So my love, First of all, thank you for joining me on this incredible live. You've seen the lineup is amazing.

Sheila Bella:

So honored. So grateful. Thank you.

Amanda Rose:

And you are obviously top of that A-list. And I just want to take a moment. And I know personally there's been a lot going on for you and I mean, there's a lot going on for everybody right now, but you...

Sheila Bella:

It's a lot going on.

Amanda Rose:

Right? Everybody's drinking tonight, guys. Everybody's drinking tonight.

Sheila Bella:

There's a lot going on.

Amanda Rose:

Yeah, so I try to keep the format super consistent, and I know Sheila, I know you have some truths and maybe a fear that you'd like to share. And I know you have some incredibly juicy ideas and I-

Sheila Bella:

Me? I hate sharing. No just kidding.

Amanda Rose:

I know. I don't have feelings. People don't know anything about me. One thing that I want to make sure to create some space for is for you to talk about your free webinar tomorrow. Because guys, I take Sheila's PMU survival webinar.

Sheila Bella:

PMU lockdown.

Amanda Rose:

Lockdown.

Sheila Bella:

Survive. Because we're all on lockdown.

Amanda Rose:

We are. It's a zombie apocalypse.

Sheila Bella:

Maybe lockdown survival guide. It should be the PMU apocalypse survival guide. Not yet. Not this time, no, not this time, but I'll be sure to have a webinar for that. Yeah, that's tomorrow.

Amanda Rose:

I participated on Sheila's webinar on Monday and she's doing it again tomorrow because it was so popular. So I just want you to just give everybody just an idea of what it's about and then also go onto RealSheilaBella on Instagram and go sign up right now.

Sheila Bella:

Yeah, it's free, it's completely free.

Amanda Rose:

Sign up after the live.

Sheila Bella:

After the live, yeah, it's completely free. I just thought it was a way to give back to the community. I wanted to do these at least once a week, sometimes twice a week, I realized that everybody's feeling paralyzed right now. I feel like the rug's just been pulled out from under us. And yeah, I just wanted to serve in this way. I didn't think that a prerecorded one would suffice. I want a space too, where people can ask me questions and I can coach them a little bit because this is not unfamiliar to me actually. So go sign up for that. Thank you, Amanda.

Amanda Rose:

Thank you sheila. So and also, just another little plug, Sheila has an amazing amount of classes, guys. She has digital marketing classes, social media classes, the list goes on and on. All of her classes, just a little plug, 50% off right now.

Sheila Bella:

That's true. That's true.

Amanda Rose:

Sheilabella.com. After this live.

Sheila Bella:

It's a great time for learning. The code is "in this together," in this together. Or just DM me, if you forget. Anyway. Thank you Amanda.

Amanda Rose:

No, of course. So what is your one truth and/or one fear that you'd like to share with everybody?

Sheila Bella:

Let me get the fear one out of the way. Yeah, let's just do it so that we can just get over it. I'm worried about my mom. My mom doesn't look like she's 64, but she's 64. I'm sorry mom, for outing your age. But anyway, it's not about-

Amanda Rose:

She does not look 64.

Sheila Bella:

And I told her, I was like, "Coronavirus doesn't discriminate when it comes to age. Okay?" And I'm not saying you have to look, I didn't say look 64, but the reason why I'm worried about her in particular is because she's a little less careful than we are. And so I come from a family of immigrant business owners and my mom and my dad, they're still working. For those of you who don't know, Sheila Bella is actually located right next door to my parents' business, which is a hardware store, an automated hardware store. And it's considered an essential business. And because of that, they're still open. And there's no way you can tell Filipino immigrants to stop working.

Amanda Rose:

Steven, Steven just said, "Ah ha, old school Asian parents."

Sheila Bella:

Exactly, Steven. You know what I'm talking about. And for those of you guys who, yeah, Asians, you know what I'm talking about? They're still hustling.

Amanda Rose:

You guys don't take a lot of days off.

Sheila Bella:

I mean, it's not just Asian immigrants, I'm sure, but maybe it's just that hustle. Anyone who has that hustle mentality, that survival mentality, can probably relate. And right now I know my mom is so annoyed with me for reminding her every day for wearing PPE, do not touch your face. I counted how many times she touched her face when she was talking to me on FaceTime the other day, I was like, "You just touched it five times in the last three minutes mother." And I know she's annoyed with me, but I would rather she'd be annoyed with me than me have any regrets, right? So and that's where I get my work ethic from, you're right, Tina. Absolutely.

Amanda Rose:

Yeah, that's right. Apples and trees. I honestly, I'm going to actually try and be more aware of how much I touched my face because I know I do it a lot and I might just have to put on a half face mask just so I stop doing. It's so automatic. Right? I feel like one of the gifts that we're presented with in this time is the space to gain more awareness right?

Sheila Bella:

Yeah. To go deep with people. Because I think I was telling you this on our call yesterday is typically, we have five windows open. It's like we're watching five different movies at the same time. You can't pay attention to any movies, but it's a great time, you're right, to just watch one, maybe pay attention to one person and go deep with that person, maybe message your client, go deep with that client, or a colleague and go deep with that colleague. And I think it is a beautiful time. It's so weird to say that. But I see.

Amanda Rose:

I feel like it's important, I mean I'm not sure if I sent you, I wanted to send you the article, my friend [Roshan 00:17:13], oh, Roshan who was down in Cancun with us, right? She wrote a beautiful article to me about cost.

Sheila Bella:

Yes. I saw that, I saw you post that.

Amanda Rose:

It was a very real look at what's going on right now. But it was all about gratitude. Right? And awareness and the choosing to be present. And so I mean, honey, we can find diamonds in any turd pile.

Sheila Bella:

We can find it. We can, we can. Yeah. Okay. Next question. Next question.

Amanda Rose:

What's your truth?

Sheila Bella:

My truth. Okay. I just came up with this 30 minutes ago and I actually recorded it because I was like, "Oh." Yeah, I was just getting annoyed. My truth is, did you know that it is a fact that during global pandemics, they don't allow pettiness. Did you know? I was taken aback by that.

Amanda Rose:

They don't allow?

Sheila Bella:

They don't allow pettiness.

Amanda Rose:

I love it.

Sheila Bella:

Listen, if all our clients have canceled, then pettiness should also be canceled. Are you looking at me? Pettiness should also be canceled. All you brands, all you suppliers and artists. We train this artist and now they're training, whatever. Right? We are all living through this trauma. We're all hurting. So just for the season of this global freaking pandemic, where none of us are making money. None of us are making money. You can't be petty. You're not allowed.

Amanda Rose:

No pettiness allowed.

Sheila Bella:

Boom, boom.

Amanda Rose:

Mike drop.

Sheila Bella:

Tradable.

Amanda Rose:

Love it. I love it.

Sheila Bella:

Don't do it. Listen. We're all hurting. We need community right now more than ever. That's why I love that you're doing this. I'm like, "Yeah, sure. Let's do it. We need more of this. We need 15,000 of these." And anybody of you guys who are watching want to do this same exact type of thing, do it, do it. We need it right now. We don't just need one. We don't need just one platform doing the same exact thing. If everybody did this, it would be such a beautiful and healing movement. Enough. And with that said, once we get back to normal, we can go back to being petty again. But not right now.

Amanda Rose:

I feel like we're all going to develop petty antibodies. [crosstalk 00:19:47] We are going to be the nicest, kindest-

Sheila Bella:

High five.

Amanda Rose:

Most patient. One of the books that you always recommended to me, which by the way I have right here.

Sheila Bella:

What is it? Oh no. Is it that one? How to Have Impossible Conversations [inaudible 00:20:06].

Amanda Rose:

Amazing. Also though.

Sheila Bella:

It hurts. That's a hard one to read.

Amanda Rose:

It's a toughie, but I love the books. But so between this book and Dare to Lead, by Brene Brown, these are two of my favorite books.

Sheila Bella:

Oh my gosh. Explains so much.

Amanda Rose:

Yeah. The one statement though is, what if we entered into every conversation with the knowledge that everyone is doing their best?

Sheila Bella:

Yeah. Well they are.

Amanda Rose:

Of course they are. Right? But how often do we go into a conversation like that where we're like, "I'm going to throw you."

Sheila Bella:

My therapist tells me that.

Amanda Rose:

This is not an easy book. I'm warning you now.

Sheila Bella:

Don't read it.

Amanda Rose:

It's called How to Have Impossible Conversations: A Very Practical Guide. Actually, if we're going to be honest, it was Sheila's husband, Will.

Sheila Bella:

That's true. Yeah Will Rouche.

Amanda Rose:

Will Rouche. I can't even pronounce his last name. Peter Bogho-

Sheila Bella:

Boghossian.

Amanda Rose:

Boghossian. And James Lindsay. This book is not... Barnes and Noble. Maybe Amazon.

Sheila Bella:

Audible.

Amanda Rose:

Audible.

Sheila Bella:

Audible.

Amanda Rose:

Anyways.

Sheila Bella:

They were on Will's podcast by the way.

Amanda Rose:

And this book, I would say the first seven or eight chapters of this book is amazing. The last couple of chapters gets super academic and crazy. I literally thought I was in my fourth year of university philosophy.

Sheila Bella:

Yeah that's James Lindsey. I know. It's very dry.

Amanda Rose:

I'm like, "Okay. Well we're done here. We're sunsetting the conversation now." Okay. So Sheila, your one idea for everybody.

Sheila Bella:

One idea. Well, I mean business is my thing. I mean, there's so many things you can do, you guys. Number one, start an online course. I mean, now's a great time to be an online entrepreneur and don't think that you have to be this major expert to teach. And the thing is, I encourage you guys to think outside of the box. What if it's not permanent makeup? What if it's not beauty? What if it's something else? What if you've been ignoring your magic elsewhere? And you have this calling to share it and to teach it? Think outside the box, go online. I definitely think that the unsung hero in this whole thing is the internet. So use it. I mean, look at us, look, we're having a good time miles and miles apart, different times zones.

And then another thing is stay connected to your clients. I know I'm giving two ideas, but I have to. Stay connected to your clients, and a way you can do that is let's say you're in charge of their hair or their brows or their skincare, or whatever it might be. How about doing drop-offs? Product drop-offs, mini drop-offs at their doorstep for things that can help them maintain their beauty. And I feel like a gesture like that would go so far. You'll have a client for life. "Here's a little tweezer kit." Right now gas is super cheap. You can still do drop-offs with little gifts and social distance. Even if it's just a pair of mini tweezers and a note, oh my gosh, you'll have a client for life and she'll refer you forever and ever. I know I would.

Amanda Rose:

Yeah. And this is something that... Emery says, "Send hair dye."

Sheila Bella:

Oh my God, me too. Help me.

Amanda Rose:

Guys. Here's one thing that I want to share one of my truths because Sheila just inspired this and we are running out of time. I got to get on with Tina, but guys, anything that you guys do with your clients right now, any actions you choose to take, any words you choose to say to them will never be forgotten. From this point forward, everything you do really, really matters. Yeah.

Sheila Bella:

Heck yeah, Amanda.

Amanda Rose:

Boom.

Sheila Bella:

Boom shakka, boom, shakka.

Amanda Rose:

All right my love, I got to get Tina on here.

Sheila Bella:

Yep. I'm excited.

Amanda Rose:

Thank you so much for your energy. Thanks for kicking this off for me. And I will talk to you really soon.

Sheila Bella:

Okay. I'll talk to you guys soon. Bye!

Amanda Rose:

Bye for now!
