Ep. 91: Pandemic? No Problem! Here's The Beauty Business Pivot You Need To Get Through!

This season is going to show us who the real leaders are.

Are you one of them?

How you show up during a time of crisis could really set you apart as a leader in the coming years and the ones can't hang on won't survive.

But that won't be you.

Stick with me, we're going to do this together!

A couple of weeks ago, if you had told me where we'd be today, I'd think you were totally crazy. If you had told me that in a matter of just a couple of weeks the whole WORLD would shut down and declare a global pandemic - I just wouldn't believe you. But we're here now. And, as terrible as it is, at some point, we just have to embrace where we are and make it work!

I know your business is struggling, mine is too. It's okay that you weren't prepared for this. Nobody was. But we can still survive. Not only that - we can thrive. In this episode, I talk about my own struggles as we go into lockdown, how I'm restructuring my business to survive during Coronavirus, and what you can do to make your business thrive.

Sheila Bella:

This season, this season is where we're going to find out who the real leaders are. Are you one of them? But new leaders are also going to be born from this COVID-19 economy, and the pretenders will be revealed. How you show up during a time of crisis, during this pandemic could set you apart as a leader in the coming years and the ones who can't hang won't survive. But not you, not you. Stick with me, we're going to do this together.

You're listening to the Pretty Rich Podcast, where you are totally the heroine of your own story. I'm your host, Sheila Bella, and I built a seven figure PMU biz without a degree, without a fancy website or a sugar daddy. And if you and I hang out here long enough, you're going to start to believe that you can do it too, because you really can.

I know you think, I don't know you, but I do. I really, really do because I am you. And I believe we're all in the same journey together. My perfect job didn't exist, so I created it. The job I wanted wasn't hiring me so I skipped the line and hired myself as CEO, just like you can. So consider me your secret beauty biz BFF, in case you need to be reminded that power is never given to you you just have to take it. Are you ready BT boss? Let's jump in.

Hey, how are you guys doing? Okay so originally I had some podcasts that I had recorded before this pandemic that I wanted to release, but I wanted to give you guys content in real time that was relevant to help you through this. And today, we're going to talk about this pandemic and ways to pivot, because that's exactly what the season is going to require of you right now. It's going to require you to get creative, be innovative. You have to pivot. Who knows maybe after this, your business won't look anything like the way it used to and perhaps, even for the better.

But before we get to today's topic, I want to give you the review of the week. Thank you so much for these iTunes reviews you guys. If you haven't left me one, please go ahead and leave me a five star review on iTunes. Or actually, if you have any business questions, you can also leave it there. So these reviews help this show rank and help it get discovered by more cool people like you. And it really is for me the best way you can say thank you if I've helped you at all in any way.

Okay. And this week's review comes from Courtney Avinson, I'm I saying that correctly? Courtney Avinson or Avinson? Oh my gosh, I don't even know. Please correct me on Instagram. Send me a message. Anyway, she says, "Life changing. It's like Sheila says all things in my heart I know to be true about my business and myself. She's savvy, smart, down to earth and so, so relatable, no matter the beauty biz you are in or how long you've been in it," she says 12 years here, "You'll learn, relate, and laugh through it all. Everything she teaches can be easily implemented, and I can't say enough amazing things about her or this podcast. I listen to every day on my way to work and it pumps me up and inspires me to be the best for my clients and myself. I love her." Thank you so much, Courtney. You have no idea how much that means to me, how much I need it sometimes because I'm human I'm up and down just like you.

This past couple of weeks definitely have been ups and downs. First of all, I want to reflect on my personal experience with COVID-19. Fiscally, obviously, it's been terrible. It's been terrible for my brick and mortar for Sheila Bella Makeup, because we were forced to close. So the revenue over there is zero. My online business, I'm not super worried about. So that's why I think it's good to have income flowing from different places. But I do worry about my girls. I worry about the girls at Sheila Bella and I have some of them there that are single mothers, a lot of them are mothers that depend on that income to provide for their families. And the girls that I have there have been super loyal and as a leader, I take on a lot of guilt. I know I didn't cause this. And I'm sure a lot of you leaders out there can probably relate, we didn't create this virus, but we still take on a lot of guilt.

So I have to remember that I didn't create COVID-19 but I feel like for a lot of leaders, especially if we're a super emotionally invested and we cared deeply and genuinely about our people, our people are everything, I think it's natural to take on that ownership and that responsibility. But I just want to encourage you right now to release it, support your girls in the way that you know how and the way that you can, in the ways that are accessible to you right now, like emotionally, mentally. Right now we can't give them jobs, but guess what? We can be a friend. We can guide them to the right places if they need to file for unemployment, we can be a resource for other things.

And especially for all the leaders who are listening to this, I know the tendency is to just give, give, give, give, give, and be the fixer of everything. But hands up, you guys hands up, you cannot fix this. I can not fix this. But this podcast though, this podcast though, is going to show you what you can control. For example, my online business is surprisingly doing well. It's doing well and I'm not too worried about my online business, that's why I want to encourage you to use this time to figure out different ways to make money. It's good to have income flowing from different places. And today my tips are going to show you what to do in order to survive this recession that we're all in.

I know there's a lot of people who feel paralyzed right now, I know there's a lot of people who feel helpless right now, but we are going to get through this. We are. And remember that this is only temporary, however, I do think that the economy after this and the world in general will be changed, will be changed forever. It won't look the same. I can't imagine people are just going to go back to eating at restaurants and go into movie theaters that easily. It's going to take some time.

Okay. Well, one last thing before I move on to today's topic, if you guys want to ask me questions, if you guys want to ask me questions and learn my PMU locked down survival guide, I am actually offering that for free, for free for all of my listeners and my followers this coming Monday, March 30th, March 30th at noon, Pacific standard time, 3:00 PM Eastern. And all you need is the app zoom. And in order to get the link, all you need to do is text the word. Sheila to 31996 if you're in the US or 69922 for Canada. So if you want in on this, if you want in on this PMU locked down business survival coaching, it's a free coaching. Do not miss it. Text the word, Sheila 31996 for the US, or 69922 for Canada and I will send you guys the link to register. I'm going to do a dive deep on how to navigate through the Coronavirus economy, and also a Q and A afterwards.

Okay, back to today's topic. I'm telling you, by the end of this episode, you're going to understand all the ways that you need to pivot in order to thrive through this time.

Number one, tip number one, know your money. Know your money. People I think right now are afraid to look at the figures, especially at a time like this, is kind of want to live in denial. I'm telling you now is not the time to close your eyes. Now is not the time to close your eyes. You need to figure out your monthly burn, whatever that is and cut costs wherever you can. Defer your payments. Have a plan. You need to narrow your focus and think.

I know that looking at your bank account and talking to your accountant or looking at your bookkeeping might be really overwhelming, but we are in a time of uncertainty. And the last thing you want is to be even more unaware to whatever might be scarce to you throughout these coming weeks. So know your numbers, know your money, be brave. You can do it. You can do it.

Tip number two. Get addicted to purpose, not the news. Get addicted to your purpose. Remember your purpose. Don't get addicted to the news. And I know it's tempting to turn on every update about COVID-19, but I said this before, bad news is like alcohol. Fear tricks our brain into thinking that we're getting things done when we're actually not. Bad news is like alcohol in the sense that you can only have so much before it's just bad now. So limit yourself to like 10 minutes a day and do it in the middle of the day so that you're not either starting your day with it or ending your day with it. Just know what you need to know in order to be aware and protect you, your family and your business, and move on.

For many of us, this is actually a really beautiful time to be alive. I can't remember the last time that I've spent this much time with my people, you know what I mean? Your core people. And it can be challenging. I want to address that, that it can be challenging, especially if you're living with people that you don't necessarily get along with. Spending this much time with your loved ones in close proximity has probably never happened before, but it's happening to all of us. So maybe use this time to dive deep and have quality conversations with your spouse, with your parents, with your roommates, with your kids, whoever it is that's in the house that you're stuck with. You are exactly where you need to be. I believe that. We are exactly where we were meant to be.

And for some reason, I believe that God gave us this challenge to find good out of it. But it's up to you to open your eyes and see where is the message? What is the reason? Where is the meaning? And I'll bet a lot of it has to do with self-discovery, awareness and definitely connection. Connection with other people and connecting with yourself, get quiet, figure out your purpose. What sets your soul on fire?

Every time I've leveled up or pivoted in my business, it actually came from a place of desperation, it did, because I felt like I had no choice. And during this time, during this time, my prediction is, there will be more online entrepreneurs born out of this than there will be deaths. And there will also be more bankruptcies that come out of this than there will be deaths.

So remember your purpose and maybe dig deeper into broadening that purpose or perhaps pivoting upon the method in which you serve. So my mission, our mission when we first started our permanent makeup businesses or beauty businesses, was to serve our precious clients. That shouldn't change. That shouldn't change. For me, it hasn't changed, but you have to recalibrate now how, the how, how you're going to serve them from home, how can you help them feel beautiful from home? How can you inspire them from home? How can you lift their spirits? How can you solve their problems? How can you be a friend? How can you create opportunities for them? You are being called to innovate. You're being called to pivot, get creative.

Your adaptability will make or break this season. I'm telling you that is the word. That is the word that you should be focused on is adaptation. You need to adapt because it is a new circumstance, which is going to require a new plan.

I know 2020 was the ultimate plot twist. Everything's canceled the whole world. This is crazy. There are people who are going to be sitting at home crying, wishing things were the way they used to be, but that isn't going to help. What's going to help is you, number one, accepting this new normal, this new reality and adapting to it, and adapting to it quick.

Tip number three, build a morning routine. Build a morning routine. You need to structure your day, and how you structure your day is everything. It dictates my whole day. Build a routine that is going to keep you fit. Not just your body, but your mind and your spirit because you being sick isn't going to help anybody. You being sluggish with brain fog, isn't going to help anybody solve this problem. If you are going to lead your family and your team out of this crisis, you need to be sharp. Heck, get in the best shape of your life. Maximize your physical capacity. Get super smart. How many of you have wanted to learn Facebook advertising but you have been saying this whole time that you just don't have the time so you paid someone else? Well, guess what? All online courses at sheilabella.com are 50% off and we have a Facebook ads course right there. By the way the code is in this together if you want to take advantage of that, in this together, or send me a message on Instagram, if you forget.

So get a morning routine that's customized to you, a morning routine that feels good, that you're excited to do and wake up early for. For example, I have a quiet space. I like to get up before the kids do. I have a quiet space where I sit down, I journal, I do my devotional, I pour my heart out and I also read the word of God. So that fills me spiritually. And I feel like it arms me for the day. Then I go out for a run, definitely social distancing, while I listened to a podcast that is fueling my mind.

And another thing I love doing is my skincare routine. And with each step of my skincare routine, I try to say something super positive to myself because honestly, you know what you need to hear more than anybody else, more than your spouse, more than your mom, more than your best friend, you need to coach yourself. Self encourage.

Listen, we're all great at something. No matter how incapable you think you are, no matter how many setbacks you've had, and this is going to be one of those setbacks, but you're going to thrive. You have greatness within you. You just need to quiet down and harness it and you have the opportunity to do that right now. You got to dig deep, be scared and do it anyway. Lean into that discomfort, of that thing that you've always wanted to do.

Now isn't the time to slack off. Now as a time to double down on disciplinehard workdedication and sacrifice. It's a global pandemic. And this virus isn't sleeping. So at the very least, don't snooze your alarm clock, stay physically fit, don't feed your body junk, feed it whole foods. Take supplements. Don't gorge yourself on nonsense. If you want quality execution, which is needed right now, for whatever goal you've set for yourself, you need quality fuel. So that means good sleep too.

And let's not forget that we're also fueled by our connections, our relationships. So set some quality time aside for that too. So if you can set aside even just 15 minutes a day, to texts somebody, text somebody that you care about or have been thinking of, it could be former clients, it could be a colleague or maybe attempt to be extra sweet to your spouse. Write him or her love notes perhaps if they like that kind of a thing, send sweet text messages or maybe use, just a few minutes a day to really, really connect with your children because the of your relationships could really raise your vibration.

I'm not one of those girls that says, "Oh, I don't need a man. I can do this alone." Sometimes I think I'm that way, but that's not who I am. That's not my DNA. I thrive off of rich relationships. And when my relationship is going really well, I am extra, extra on point. I'm extra sharp, words come quicker to me, I'm funnier for some reason. It matters. And if you're the same way, you need to get it right sister, friend. Do whatever it is you need to do in order to get your relationships right. And if you're hanging on to unforgiveness, if you're hanging on to unforgiveness, you need to let that shit go. Because when you hang on to anger, you experience it twice unnecessarily. And unforgiveness is a distraction because it gives us a false sense that we have the ability to decide who is deserving and who isn't. So it distracts you from the fullness of your mission and your purpose and your potential.

Listen, someday, you're going to look back at this time as one of the most trying times of your life. You're going to tell the story to your kids, I don't know, 10, 15 years from now as to how you thought that this pandemic was going to end you. And you're going to say that it didn't. It didn't even come close. You're going to tell the story of how you used this time to pivot and find a genius within you that's been sleeping this whole time. How you felt the fear, but did it anyway, how you got creative because you had to. And what started as the worst thing ever, brought out the best ever from within you.

Much, much, much love to you all. Be safe, wash your hands, stop touching your face and take care of your loved ones, especially your elderly. Until next week.
