Ep. 49: Growth Through Pain

Have you ever experienced a deep loss? Did you allow yourself to fully feel your grief? How did you come out of that season of your life?

Grief and pain are tricky to deal with. Our culture doesn't have a great relationship with either. You might be the kind of person that just hates dealing with grief, you can't handle it. You just want to shut it out and not deal with it.

And I understand that. I do. A lot of the time we can think of grief and pain as inconveniences. Like "Oh I don't have time to be upset, I don't have time to feel my feelings I have a life I have to get on with." But that's not healthy, you know?

In this episode, I have my good friend, Anthea. You're probably familiar with her, she's on the show a lot. We always have fun, right? We're always joking around and laughing. It's crazy. But we're real. We're always real. And, at the time of recording this episode, Anthea had just gone through some major life changes. She was dealing with a lot, some pretty big losses. And we don't shy away from that. We jump right in.

You'll hear us talk about Anthea's mom, her experience with ALS and frontal lobe dementia, changing family dynamics, and how she grew through her pain. If these are things you normally avoid, I highly recommend you give it a listen.

Here are the episode highlights:

‣‣  [08:50]  Anthea talks about her whirlwind December, starting with getting married.

‣‣  [10:03]  We talk about what it was like when her family first started to realize that something was wrong with her mom.

‣‣  [14:09]  Because of how their mom raised them, it took a while for Anthea and her family members to acknowledge that their mom needed to see a doctor. Here, Anthea talks about the tough decisions and conversations her family had to have before they got to the point of finally getting her diagnosed.

‣‣  [21:47]  For two and a half years, her family had to adjust to their new relationships and the family situation. We talk about how the family supported each other while watching her mom's health deteriorate.

‣‣  [24:15]  We talk about when Anthea knew that she needed to continue living her life and showing up as the woman her mom had worked so hard for her to be, as a way of honoring her sacrifices.

‣‣  [27:16]  Here, Anthea and I really get into spirituality and healing.
