Ep. 67: Habits of One Percenters in the Beauty Business: Permanent Makeup, Lashes, Hair Extensions and Much More

So, you want to make money.

Why?

Yes, I know, we all want to make money. Yes, that's a given, but I think if we really look deeply into what that money means, I think what we're all looking for is peace.

Who are the one-percenters in your industry?

If you talk to people who are rich, what it basically feels like is that you barely look at prices anymore. It's freedom to experience the world and not in any deep, meaningful way, but it's freedom to experience the world without limits in some areas, financially. So yeah, being rich has its perks. Yes, it can buy some form of happiness. Not love, not deep-rooted meaning or fulfillment, but it's nice. And I know a lot of you listening to this want that. You want to stop worrying. You want peace. You want options. You want freedom. You want stability. And you want to see the world. Because why not when you're rich?

In today’s episode, we talk about the 1% and what are they doing—what they have.

Because why can't we all be like that? The battle, friends, is in your subconscious.

So in this podcast, I lay out what the 1% have in detail:

1. A strong belief habit
2. Time management
3. Self-discipline
4. A zero-jealousy policy
5. Consistency
6. They invest

So you want to make money? Well, I'm telling you, you can!

Listen to the episode for the hows, whys, and tips to making yourself a part of the 1%!

Here are the episode highlights:

‣‣  [10:00]  No way I could be a one-percenter with my business. There aren't enough customers in the world! They've been taken already! The battle is in your subconscious. I promise, there's plenty to go around. I speak more on that here.

‣‣  [12:55]  What you're probably looking for is the first thing that one-percenters have, and that's a strong belief habit. I explain why it has to be known as a habit, and the battle in your subconscious has a lot to do with that.

‣‣  [13:18]  The second thing one-percenters have (and they're dang good at it): time management. This is so lucrative and necessary. Here's where I lay that out for you.

‣‣  [15:02]  One-percenters self-discipline. It's not easy! But that's what sets them apart. I explain why here.

‣‣  [16:41]  A zero-jealousy policy is another thing the one-percenters have, and they use it to their advantage. If you're worried about how everyone else is doing, all of your time and energy is spent on them instead of you! You can't do that as a one-percenter. I talk more about that here.

‣‣  [20:00]  This right here is so important. It's not something that all one-percenters necessarily have, but I think it's so necessary, because it identifies you as someone worth being around. Don't badmouth your "competition". Just do better. Why and how is found here.

‣‣  [22:03]  Consistency is key. That's not just a trite saying, that's also something that the one-percenters have. I speak more on that here.

‣‣  [24:04]  Lastly, one-percenters invest. And no, investing isn't limited to the stock market. There's so much I unpack here, you don't want to miss it.

Who are the one percenters in your industry? Who are the one percenters in permanent makeup. What about in the lash world? Who are these one percenters making 7, 8, 9, 10 figures? Who has a gazamillion, jillion dollars? Yes, I know, we all want to make money. Yes, that's a given. But, I think if we really look deeply into what that money means, I think what we're all looking for is peace. You want to go on vacation with your family and make memories without worry. You want to be able to care for your aging parents. You want to give your kids the best possible experience of their childhood as you can, and not have to worry about any of this stuff.

And hey, if you want to get the most expensive bottle of wine at Whole Foods. Yeah, being rich financially has some perks.

So today's episode, we're going to talk about the 1% and what are they doing. Anyway, these one percenters, why can't we all be like that? Well, we're going to dissect what they have, what they're doing versus what you're doing. It's today's episode on Pretty Rich Podcast.

Welcome to the Pretty Rich Podcast, where every woman is the heroine of her own story. I'm your host, Sheila Bella, and I built a million dollar beauty business from nothing. So maybe if you listen enough, you'll start to believe that you can do it, too. Because if the perfect job doesn't exist, well, you can create it. If the job you want isn't hiring you, you can unapologetically hire yourself. Each episode will equip you with empowering conversations on how to grow a lifestyle that's pretty rich in love, beauty, wellness, and financial wealth. I'm Sheila Bella, beauty business coach, celebrity brow artist, global success speaker, author, serial entrepreneur, life, mother, friend, daughter, and you forever positive beauty biz sales guru. Let's go.

Welcome, everyone. It's Sheila Bella. And today, we're going to talk about how to be the 1% in your industry. This was inspired by an Instagram post that I did the other day because it just pains me so much to see all of you good, honest, hardworking people, artists, and technicians, and a lot of you struggle. You're on the struggle bus. You struggle to gain success and visibility. So, why is it that only a very small percentage of PMU artists make it? And we can change this by mimicking the actions, decisions, and habits of the people at the top, of that 1%.

So even right now, listening to Pretty Rich Podcast, 1% of you listening to this, you're booked out. You're booked out. You're good. You have a profitable product. You've sold out your courses. You hold your industry. You know you're a leader in this industry, and you're listening to Sheila Bella right now. So, thank you. Oh my God. Thank you so much. One percenter, I adore you. Good job. Congrats. You go. Let's do lunch.

Next, the other 10% of you reading this are immensely comfortable, decently booked, and wealthy. You're wealthy. But the rest of you, you're on the train of misery. Yeah. You're unable to make it work. You're barely scraping by. Some months are good. Some months are bad. And you're kind of just guessing, guessing what to do. You're wondering why it's not working. There's a lot of instability going on, and maybe you're sick of it. Maybe you want a taste of that 1% life, and you're like, "Okay, fine. Okay, let me do it. Okay. It's going to be hard, but it'll be worth it."

Well, number one, for those of you who are in that position, you need to come to the Pretty Ambitious Summit, first of all. It's the first live event for PMU and beauty boss babes who are ready for change, who are hungry for more. You're going to get a lot of information at the summit. It's going to be full of amazing speakers. The one percenters are talking, basically.

So if you are on the train of misery and you're pulling that cord because you want to tell Mr. Train Man ... Wait, what? Oh, conductor. Mr. Conductor that you need to stop and get off the train of misery. Listen to this, because it's not customers that we have to fight over. I think a lot of businesses believe that so if so-and-so is doing the same exact thing in my area, and I'm offering that same service, then we got to fight for clients. We got to fight for the customers. Ugh. Couldn't be further from the truth. It's a terrible way to look at it. It's not a very good strategy.

You see, it's not customers we have to fight over because there are more than enough to go around. The battle is in your subconscious. It's in what you believe to be true about yourself. Because what you believe to be true affects your actions. 80% of our actions that we don't even think about are subconscious, and they are crafted through our deepest beliefs. So if you want to change your actions, you first of all got to change what you think.

In the morning, I have something that I like to call a to-think list. What? What's that? You know how everyone has a to-do list? I have to-think list. What are the things that I'm going to believe about myself today that will help me execute my to-do? Some of you might be too afraid to post any of your successes, or your story, or just show up in any authentic way because you're afraid of judgment. But if you write in your to-think list that if those people judge you they're not your people, and that the good will overwhelmingly outweigh the bad, that's going to change your actions.

Holy moly. You guys know I don't talk about anything that I'm not super passionate about and that I don't totally believe in. This next thing that I'm about to tell you about, you need in your life if you're a permanent makeup artist. And that is PMU School. It's free. It's a free podcast you can listen to every single day that's five minutes long and is guaranteed to uplevel your PMU knowledge for free. What?

There is so much misinformation out there, and people train once, pay thousands of dollars. And in order to learn anything new, you have to pay again. So if you've been looking for something quick, easy, and not boring to listen to, this is it. PMU School is how you're going to get a daily microdose of PMU education, so you've got to subscribe. It's a podcast for artists by experienced artists. So whether you're newly certified or an expert professional, you got to tune in to this free daily podcast and level up your PMU knowledge in less than five minutes a day. And it's presented by the American Academy of Micropigmentation Board of Permanent Makeup. PMU school will keep you posted and informed on your way to work every single day. Just type in PMU School on iTunes, Spotify, or Google Podcasts, and I'll see you there.

So, the battle is in our subconscious, but it's also in our human nature. The 1% have, the first thing I said, a strong belief habit. Realize I said habit, because positive thinking doesn't just happen. You have to create habits around it that support that, like a to-think list, or listening to this podcast, or calling a good friend that's super positive that's going to help you think positive. So yeah, that's the first thing.

The second thing is time management. Yeah. Every minute of every day is precious, especially if you're business building, especially if you're in hustle mode. Imagine if you just woke up one hour earlier every single day for a year. Forget the year. Let's just say ... Because you want to sleep in on weekends. Let's just say it's like 300 days. So that's waking up one hour early for 300 days out of the year will give you an extra 300 hours to work on your business. Every month, that's equivalent to 25 hours per month. And every week, that's an extra 6.25 hours per week. What? Oh my gosh. What could I do if I had six hours straight, no distractions? I mean, I'd get so much done. I'd creates so much content for you guys. I'd write courses, I'd work the gram.

So, don't underestimate what waking up early can do for you. Maybe you can use that hour for self-care, have a meditation or spiritual practice, move your body, journal, maybe listen or read something inspiring or educational. You would probably show up as a much sharper, more prepared human for the rest of the day. So, one percenters take care of themselves from the inside out so they can show up 100%. And I know this for a fact that most billionaires have a morning routine. So if it's good enough for them, it should be good enough for you.

Next thing that one percenters have, one percenters have self-discipline. Not motivation. Let me say that again. One percenters have self-discipline. They don't rely on motivation because motivation is fleeting. Instead, they developed a really awesome mindset fueled by discipline. Because motivation, inspiration comes and goes depending on the day. Especially if you're doing well, you're not motivated. But if you have a repeatable system, a repeatable habit that, hey, at nine o'clock, this is what I'm doing ... I am writing captions at nine o'clock. At 9:30, I am making sales calls. At 10 o'clock, I'm doing outreach to salons in my area. And you have this day, basically, where you've crafted success habits and you're disciplined in following them through.

A lot of people sometimes listen to inspirational things, maybe like this podcast. Then, as soon as they get out of the car or they take their headphones off at the gym, nothing happens. I mean, I'm glad this made you feel good or whatever podcast or book you're reading made you feel good. But without the execution, nothing's going to change. So, you got to have the discipline to execute, not just to listen and ingest content. You have to have the discipline to execute.

Next thing, one percenters have a zero jealousy policy. They're happy for other people. Other successful people don't bother them. They don't bother them. Instead, they see them as colleagues. They see them as friends, and they reach out and collaborate with them. They don't shy away from making friends with competitors because they see everybody as a teacher. Guys, the only way to grow on Instagram right now is through collaboration. I'm sorry. It is. I mean, I should do a whole another podcast on this, but ..

The algorithm sucks, right? The algorithm is actually forcing us to be friends with one another because it's the only way to grow. It's forcing us to work together against it to be real humans. And God forbid you leave a genuine human comment on somebody else's page. What?

Did you know that a really good comment, like a good comment that elicits a response from others, gets like a 40% follow-back rate? I'm totally digressing, but I don't care. Here's a tip. You leave good comments and stop ... Don't even like people's pictures anymore. It doesn't ... Look, fine. Go ahead and like them. But really, if you think that liking other people's pictures is going to help you grow, it's more commenting. A good comment on a post has a 40% follow-back rate. I'm going to throw that in.

But, yeah, let's go back to zero jealousy policy. Let's tie this in with a comment. So let's say on your competitor's page you leave a genuine comment. Really, who is following your competitor? Probably a bunch of potential clients. While I don't suggest that you steal your competitor's business, you might offer things that are in alignment with their followers. Maybe not the same exact service, but maybe a slightly different service. Or even you trainers out there, if you leave genuine comments on your competitor trainers' page, there's no way you're teaching the same exact, same exact technique. Come on. Every artist has their way.

My point being is that you are you, and no one else can be you. So when other people succeed in front of you, that's their success. Be happy for them. And don't think like, "Oh, well, she's done it already, so I can't do it anymore." What? No, no, no, no, no. You will never duplicate what she's doing. Ever. Not exactly. You're different people. You will do it as you with all your quirks and your uniqueness.

You might also have a training, but it's going to be yours. The best thing you can do is to work with people who have a lot in common with you, because you will find that you all offer something slightly different. Really. It will never be exactly the same. And the 1% understand that success isn't finite. But, other people's success only proves that their own is possible. Zero jealousy policy.

I just need to throw this in there. Stop badmouthing each other. If you can do better, just do better. There is zero reasons to take down a competitor on purpose. It makes you look horrible. There are probably a ton of people who maybe outwardly support you. But for every one person that outwardly supports your shit-talking, I'm just going to say it, are 10 people who probably secretly think you are just not a team player and somebody they don't want to associate themselves with. Trolls attract trolls, and I don't want to be in that club.

If you're not sure about something, don't shit talk it. Think about the effort that it took to crap on other people on social media and what you could have done with that time. Let's say it took you 30 minutes to write that post, crapping on somebody else's endeavors. Oh my gosh. Do you know what I could do with 30 minutes of uninterrupted time where my kids aren't screaming at me or my staff isn't like calling me? Oh my God. Get so much done.

And guys, I say this in the most loving way possible. Please know that as direct as I'm being right now, I mean it with so much love. Because when you let other people affect you in that way, you're actually dimming your own light. It's probably rooted in not understanding how immensely powerful you are. And I do believe that each and every person, including trolls, actually, I do believe that each and every person has their own unique magic, and we need to stop wasting our time in negativity. And for those of you who read that stuff, stop entertaining it. Don't encourage it. Heck, call it out. Or at the very least, just ignore.

Next thing one percenters have is consistency. They don't quit. They don't quit. They developed strong patterns. Just like brushing your teeth or showering, their success habits are daily. I said this already. And it happens rain or shine. But, this especially is important when it comes to setbacks. Because setbacks, especially in business building, are gnarly. And they happen a lot.

The most successful people I know, you would never believe what they're going through. They just don't talk about it on social media. I have a billionaire friend who's getting hate mail on the daily. I have a seven-figure friend who's just lost like three people in her company for different various reasons. She is under so much stress that her hair is falling out.

This stuff will happen. It doesn't stop happening. What you need is just a quicker comeback rate. Just need to recover quicker. That way, you don't lose your consistency. Okay, three people on my staff quit on me today. They're all leaving in two weeks. Wonderful. Pardon me while I go to the closet. I just need to scream. I'll be right back. Ah! Come out of the closet. Say, "Okay, I'm fine. Now what?"

So, that's like a super exaggerated comeback scenario. But, long story short, you just got to do what you got to do to move on. You can be consistent and mourn. You can be consistent and grieve or be pissed, but you cannot let that consistency slip. And for those of you who are maybe going through that right now, I just want to give you a big hug. I respect you tremendously. You are a real entrepreneur.

And the last thing on this list, what one percenters have is they invest. They bet on themselves. They know that you can't hang on to every penny and expect to grow a business. You got to let go to grow. If you need to write that down, you should pull over and write that down. Let go to grow. Let go to grow. They pay the right people. They hire the right people. They pay for the programs. They pay for the export. Experts. They pay for the experts and the right mentors to teach them and train them to be better. They invest in the right conferences because they know that live events, they really are ... If it's not my event, really, live events are transformational. Just go to one, anything that you feel like might help you, even if it's not the Pretty Ambitious Summit. I'm telling you, it will matter.

And whatever it is that you invest in, whether it's a coach, whether it's hiring an expert in something, or going to an event, or hiring a mentor, whatever it is that you do, go into it all in. If you're paying for something or someone to help you change, you have to be open to it. So, the 1% bet on themselves, and they invest in the right things. When I mean invest, I mean both time and money.

So, ask yourself right now, what is at stake if you don't achieve your goals for the next year, for the new year that's coming up? What is truly at stake? Who is counting on you to change? Who will benefit from your success?

And think about this. Once you have mastered all of these success habits, and once you have built that amazing dream business that you've said all along that you're going to do, picture a scene. Picture a scene as if your life was a movie from the future. Is it a vacation with your family? Is it a quiet Sunday night? Is it a date night with your husband? But, what's different about it? Maybe you're not worried anymore, and you can take a real breath. Maybe you'll be more present with the family because you'll no longer be super anxious about where your next client is going to come from.

My whole goal for this podcast, my platform, my event, my Instagram, whatever it is, my whole goal is to help you, the listener, right now to truly be your friend in this and walk you through this crazy entrepreneurial jungle. I want to give you hope that we all struggle with the same things. We all struggle with self-discipline, right? We all struggle with being jealous once in a while. We all struggle with consistency. We all struggle with not wanting to take a risk. We're all the same. But, hopefully, listening to this podcast helps you be more aware of it and helps you at least make some change. Because I truly believe the more happy and successful people we have in this world and in our industry, the better it'll be for all of us.

So, I hope today's podcast really helps you pinpoint where your issues may lie, why your business is still stagnant. It's in your nature, right?
