Ep. 107: Characteristics Of A Great Mentor In The PMU Or Beauty Business In General

You don't NEED a mentor to succeed but a mentor will HELP you succeed FASTER and save you from making MISTAKES you could easily avoid.

I think that if all of the people who quit their businesses because they feel like they'll never be successful had a mentor, they would have reached success way earlier on. They never would have had to quit. Mentors don't make the work easy but they make it more achievable.

They take a lot of the guesswork out of starting a business for you. They help guide you, they let you learn from their mistakes. If you don't have a mentor or coach now, then you should get one ASAP.

I love mentoring because I love empowering women to be their best selves, to show them that they CAN achieve the success that they dream of, and they CAN do it themselves. I'm not doing it for them! I'm just helping them along. It's immensely rewarding for me.

If you're considering mentorship or are curious about what you should look for in a great mentor, I've got you covered. In this episode, I go over all of the characteristics of a great mentor that will help you succeed in PMU, beauty business, or in general. Because no matter what you need - there's a mentor for that.

Here are the episode highlights:

Sheila Bella:

Not having a mentor or a business coach is like this. It's like my five year old, who's in virtual kindergarten right now, doing his homework but there's no teacher. That's totally what being in business for yourself is like without a mentor, a boss even, or a coach. It's like being in kindergarten without a teacher, trying to do the assignments. My five year old, when he's not in Zoom with his teacher, he thinks he's doing a great job, so proud of himself. "Mama, look, look!" And it's just a disaster. Because there's no one there to show him how, no one there to check his work, and it's exactly the same thing with you being in business by yourself. We'll dive in deeper to that in this podcast. Welcome back.

You're listening to the Pretty Rich Podcast, where you are totally the heroine of your own story. I'm your host, Sheila Bella, and I built a seven figure PMU biz without a degree, without a fancy website, or a sugar daddy. If you and I hang out here long enough, you're going to start to believe that you can do it, too, because you really can. I know you think I don't know you, but I do, I really, really do because I am you, and I believe we're all on this same journey together. My perfect job didn't exist, so I created it. The job I wanted wasn't hiring me, so I skipped the line and hired myself as CEO, just like you can. So consider me your secret beauty biz BFF, in case you need to be reminded that power if never given to you, you just have to take it. Are you ready, beauty boss? Let's jump in.

What up, what up sister friends? How are you guys? Okay, today we're going to talk all about mentorship, we're going to talk about business coaching, we're going to talk about joining masterminds, all this stuff. The online coaching world is exploding. People are hiring mentors for the craziest things. People are hiring coaches for birthing, coaches for getting rid of acne, coaches for learning something like rollerskating or something like that. I mean, it is really, really insane. If you dive into the world of coaching, you can pretty much find a coach to help you with any niche, any specific topic that you might be dealing with.

Why is coaching blowing up? Because it works. When I coach my students inside Pretty Rich Bosses, I know that they just want the results. "Sheila, just give me the result, already. Give me the formula." My job is to get my students from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible, and to cut out all the unnecessary information, like the history of microblading, or memorizing old adages, or something like that. When you hire a coach, a good coach, their job is to identify the low hanging fruit in your situation, and help you experience quick wins. And then, set you up so that you can continue to experience wins on your own, so you basically learn how to fish. You know that old saying? "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime." It's the same thing with hiring a coach. Or, it should be. Well, when you hire us, rather that's exactly what we do.

Whether or not you yourself are thinking about getting a mentor, hiring a mentor, or becoming one yourself, stick around because I'm going to break down why mentorship is so cool. But before we begin, I just want to read the review of the week.

All right, the review of the week! Oh my gosh. Every time I read these, you guys, it's the first time I'm reading them. I don't read them first, and then tell you. No, it's the first time I'm reading them, truly. Okay. This one is from Lauren M. Long, the subject is truly authentic, the title is Truly Authentic. She says, "I'm an aesthetician in Pennsylvania, and have struggled a lot with confidence and knowing my worth in the industry. I previously worked at a spa, and the owner told me short girls don't have confidence." What? What? Heightism is a thing now? Oh my goodness.

She says, "Well, me being five-two short self started to believe that." I'm five-two, by the way. Okay, back to the review. "I recently left that job, and now have my own suite that is truly taking off. I've gained a lot of confidence as well. Sheila has an authentic personality, and once you start listening to her podcast, it's like she's one of your best friends. I do not know her personally, but I feel supported and encouraged by her personally. She's great, and I'm so glad I found her podcast. I look forward to listening to her in my car, almost every day." Thank you, Lauren. Oh my goodness. Yeah. Do I say oh my goodness every time I get moved by something?

Yeah, I can't tell you how much these reviews mean to me. I'm human, I'm just like everybody else, so whenever I read these reviews it really, really lights me up from the inside out. It's like, what? I feel it in my toes, my toes are tingly right now. So thank you so much, Lauren, for taking the time to empower another woman. Ah, be blessed.

Okay, back to female empowerment. Mentorship is a form of female empowerment. I just want to explain it in this way, because as a business owner, as a business owner, I built my business, in the beginning, by myself. Was I getting anywhere? Not really, not really. So when you're in business by yourself, and you're "your own boss," you're making decisions alone, in your thoughts. You might ask people around you for advice, like your husband or boyfriend, your mom, your sister, your friends, but it's not like they've ever been successful in the exact thing you're trying to be successful in. People might mean well, have the best intentions, but unless they've built a successful business themselves, don't give their advice too much weight. Don't do it!

Okay, when you're your own boss and you're in business by yourself, you're making decisions alone in your head. When you make a call, how do you know it's the right one, without someone who has done it before to show you how? Or, to confirm that it's the correct decision? You don't know. So most people in this industry are what I like to call spaghetti CEOs. Yeah, trademark that, don't take it. It's a Sheila Bella original. So spaghetti CEOs, basically what they do is just take a bowl of spaghetti, a bowl of noodles, throw it against the wall, and see what sticks. No! You cannot expect to build a real business without real experts, and proven strategies. If you're not growing in your business, you may be a spaghetti CEO.

I need to give you some tough love, because you and I have been on this journey for a long time together, and some sound advice. If you're in business, and you're going about your business without guidance from someone who has done it before, gone before you, you're literally doing exactly what my five year old in kindergarten, virtual kindergarten, is doing. Scribbling on walls, and on paper, and construction paper with broken crayons, thinking oh, that looks pretty. He doesn't even know he's totally messing it up. Mentorship is really important. Whether or not you get it from me, doesn't matter. If it's not from me, get it from someone.

Here are a few qualities of a great mentor. A great mentor challenges you. Always pushes you to be better, never lets you on your laurels. Somebody who motivates you to be better, too. A great mentor is also experienced. Your mentor should have a ton of relevant experience and wisdom that you can draw from, that are tailored to your specific industry. It would be even better if that mentor has had experience, and success, in the very thing that you also want success in.

Which brings me to the next point. Yeah, your mentor should be where you want to be, right now. Your mentor should be where you want to be. This is so important, you guys, because nothing irks me more than business coaches whose main business is coaching, when they themselves have never built a successful business, so check for that. A great mentor also supports you, supports you even when you stumble. Even when you fall, has your back 100%.

A great mentor is also a great listener. Okay? Your mentor should be willing to listen to more than just their own opinion because this is a two-way street. Your mentor should be somebody who is willing, and eager, to learn what life is like through your lens. What is it like in your world? Bring me into your world.

Let me see. What else? Okay. A great mentor should also be invested in your success. Like, deeply invested in your success, and you will be able to feel it. At Pretty Rich Bosses is invested in your success, aside from, oh my gosh, we just get so much fulfillment when we get back these testimonials from our alumni is because we have a reputation to uphold. We are a company that's full of integrity. If you could only be a fly on the wall at these Zoom meetings with my coaches, oh my gosh, the five of us get super emotional every time we share student wins. Oh gosh, it's so rewarding, it's so fulfilling. It's like a dopamine hit. I don't know, it's like a high that we chase, so we want more of that. Yeah, it's awesome seeing our students win, seeing our students tell us, "Hey, I'm making $3,000 a month. I joined this program to make $12,000 a month," and they hit that goal. Oh my gosh, yeah.

Okay, another thing. A mentor provides constructive feedback. Your mentor should be somebody who’s not afraid to tell you the truth, somebody who's not going to sugarcoat what is going on. But, always do it in a loving, kind way because if they're invested in your success, they're going to be honest with you. They're going to call you out, because that's what you need in order to succeed. But with that said, with that constructive criticism, your mentor should also have a deep respect for you, and you should feel that deep respect. A great mentor should never look down on you, and instead sees you as their equal, their colleague, somebody who is on the same trajectory of growth, but they're just a few steps ahead. But, it's not like we're not all going to end up in the same place. No, we're all going to end up at the top, it's just that I might be a few steps ahead.

Lastly, your mentor should be available. Your mentor should be available. At Pretty Rich Bosses, our coaches are there for you, to answer any questions you may have through a thread, through a chat that we set up, so that you can ask our coaches questions, or guidance, or advice, any time. Except Sundays.

So if you're in the beauty industry, and you're still scribbling along, throwing spaghetti against the wall, seeing what sticks, and maybe you're saying to yourself, "Ugh, I'm not growing!" You're listening to this podcast and you're thinking, you know what? She's right, I'm a spaghetti CEO. Guilty! Okay, I want to invite you to change all that. Stop trying to build your business with a blindfold on. There is something better. I built a seven-figure PMU business, and seven-figure online business, and I can show you how to get to your goal in lightning speed. Sure, you can figure it out. Sure, you could figure it out. You could Google it, that's going to be ... I don't know. I don't know if this is Google-able.

Long story short, you're just not going to get there as quickly. Let's not be kidding ourselves, I had my first pumpkin spice the other day. The year is flying by. Pumpkin spice is the indication to me that that's a wrap, the year is over! I'm sure a lot of us can't wait for 2020 to be over. Anyway, the point is quit playing with your life, quit dabbling in your goals and your dreams, be aggressive about achieving the things that are most important to you.

So Pretty Rich Bosses is my one-on-one mentorship program. You heard that right, we restructured, it is one-on-one. One-on-one, where we take spaghetti CEOs and turn them into six to seven-figure earning beauty entrepreneurs. How fricking cool is that? We do it every day. So this program, honestly, is as beautiful as it is effective. The relationships formed in this exclusive community are next level. If you're curious about this, if you're curious if this is for you ... okay, just curious. You're not going to sign up, you're just curious. Why don't you send me a DM on Instagram? We're going to do it this way, let's just hop right to the personal connection. Send me a DM on Instagram, @RealSheilaBella, the link is in the show notes to my Instagram if you're confused. Send me a DM on Instagram if you're curious, with the words "curious about coaching." Simple. DM on Instagram, @RealSheilaBella, with the words "curious about coaching," and we'll take it from there.

If it's not us, if it's not us that you're interested in hiring as mentors or business coaches, that's fine, too. But my encouragement to you today is don't wait any longer, time is moving too fast. Your goals are too important. One day, you're going to blink and you're going to be 60 years old. We don't have as much time as we think, so seize the day. Man, crushing your goals feels so good. Not only does your life change, but the lives of those around you. And, people think that building a big business is really stressful, and that it'll take you away from the things that are most important to you like your family, if it is, you're doing it wrong. It should be the opposite. If you do it right, it actually gives you more time, and more freedom, for doing things that are most important to you, like spending time with family.

That's it for today's episode. God bless you guys, I'll see you next week!
