Beauty business coach Sheila Bella on five common social media mistakes and what to do instead.

5 Social Media Mistakes You're Probably Making

AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD!

Social media is an essential part of an entrepreneur's job in 2022. You have to stand out in a sea of other beauty businesses, and a lot of that comes down to your social media content, how consistent you are, and how professional it is.

I know that it can be really frustrating to put so much time and effort into your content and not see any growth. I see it happen with my students in Pretty Rich Bosses every single day—my posts aren't getting any engagement, I'm not getting any new followers, it's like people aren't seeing my content. And worst of all: I think I've been shadowbanned.

When assessing your Instagram growth, the first thing to do is give yourself an IG audit. Where do you think things are going wrong with your content, and how can you fix it?

I've put together the top 5 most common mistakes I see people make with their social media content and how you can fix it today!

Let's go!

Four signs it's time to raise your prices from beauty business coach Sheila Bella: demand is too high, competitor prices are higher, increased prices test well, and cost of business is increasing

1. Lack Of Consistency

The most common mistake I see people make with their social media is a lack of consistency.

You know when you go to check someone's profile and the last time they posted was four months ago? You scroll a little further, and you see that occasionally they post every day, sometimes every few days, or every few weeks, and sometimes they don't post for several months!

How does that make you feel when you check their profile?

Does it make you want to invest in their products and services? Do you trust that they'll respond to you quickly? Do you believe that their services will be good?

Probably not! I know I don't.

So the first thing to assess is your consistency. Are you giving yourself a reliable reputation among your potential customers? How can you fix this?

Maybe you're not the kind of person that can post every day. That's okay! I personally think that the more content you put out, the better. But if that's not realistic for you—don't try to commit to it!

The best way to be more consistent on social media is to set a schedule or a routine that works best for you.

If you try to force yourself to post every single day, knowing that you won't have the energy to keep that up, you're just going to end up burning yourself out and dropping the ball again!

Set yourself up for success and choose a routine that feels doable.

The more you get used to posting consistently, the more likely it is that you'll be able to work up to posting more often.

Don't let Instagram control you—you control it. Remember that!

2. Not Having A Plan

Not having a social media/content plan is the second most common mistake I see beauty entrepreneurs make.

Okay, so you fix your posting schedule and you're posting more consistently. You're posting, for example, three times a week. But what are you posting on those days?

Are you posting before and after pictures? Are you posting client testimonials? Are you making graphics that promote your products and services?

Do you have a plan for what you post, or are you just scrolling through your photo gallery every day and posting whatever looks decent?

A plan will not only help you be more consistent with what you post, but it will take so much of the stress and anguish that we associate with posting on social media away.

Having a content plan can be as simple as saying:

I'm going to post three times a week.

Every Monday, I'm going to post a motivational quote and ask my audience to share it.

Every Wednesday, I'm going to post a before and after picture with a client testimonial.

Every Friday, I'm going to promote my products and services.

Doesn't that feel so much simpler than spinning the roulette wheel in your camera reel and just hoping for the best?

Come up with a content plan and stick to it.

3. No Personality

Here's the problem with beauty business accounts that are entirely before and after pictures. Sure, the work might be beautiful, but do you know anything about the artist who's done the work?

Do you have any sense for who she is, what drives her, what motivates her, why she's passionate about tattooing your brows?

There is a whole ocean of beauty businesses on the internet for your potential clients to choose from. You need to be doing everything you can to help your business stand out, and the most vital tool you have in your kit is YOURSELF. Your unique personality is essential to your brand.

Take a look at my Instagram: @realsheilabella.

Do you get a sense of who I am? Do you get a sense of my personality and how it affects my brand?

Not only does this help me build a unique brand, but it also helps me connect to my ideal audience!

Take a look at your Instagram. Does it say anything about who you are as a person? Does it give your audience a good understanding of who you are as a person?

If not—fix it! I know that this can be super scary for people. Putting yourself into your work makes you more vulnerable, especially online!

I always say: opinions don't pay the bills! I've got a family and kids to feed! I can't be wasting my time worrying about what people will think every time I post a video of myself dancing on the internet.

Like everything with your business: find the way that's authentic for you. I like to use a lot of bright colors and bold music! I make big statements, and I've got a big personality to back it up. I like to have FUN, and that's all a part of my brand! Maybe that's nothing like you.

Find your happy medium and inject it into your Instagram feed, and you'll see your audience start to grow, and your engagement will begin to increase because people will see the person behind the business, not just the work.

4. Not Creating Engaging Content

If your engagement is critically low on Instagram, it's probably because your content isn't engaging enough.

If you find yourself complaining about your audience not engaging with your content enough, then it's time to do some work to find out what content they actually want to engage with!

There are a couple of different ways you can go about it.

First, I suggest looking at your current content and seeing what's gotten the highest engagement. Check your comments, shares, and posts that have generated conversations in your DMs. This assessment is a good pulse check! If there is content that performs better than others, capitalize on that! Make more of the content that usually gets better engagement, and you're guaranteed to increase your engagement overall.

Next, see if your personality is coming out in your content. Are the captions you write interesting? Do they make you want to read more?

A lot of the time, when we're just starting to share content online, we have this idea of who we should be and what we should sound like. Don't let that stifle your unique voice!

Remember, you've got a lot of value to bring to your business just by being yourself.

The more you write like yourself, the more natural it will sound, and the more engaging your content will become, I promise!

Check out this blog post on content apps my team, and I use for more helpful tips to create and write better content!

Here are some more tips to make your content more engaging:

  • Use lists
  • Create carousels—they get better engagement!
  • Don't fight the algorithm—use video
  • Take risks—try new things and see what works!

5. Not Utilizing A Call To Action

Not using a call to action is, perhaps, the most critical mistake I see beauty entrepreneurs make with their social media.

You need to have a call to action for EVERY post you make; whether it's a post on your Instagram feed, Instagram story, YouTube video, Podcast Episode—whatever it is, it needs a call to action.

Calls to action are essential because they guide your audience to interact with you, engage with the post, and actually use your product! They are the critical element to building a good relationship with your following!

If you want to get better engagement and make sales at the same time, start using a call to action for EVERY post.

They're really not hard to do once you get the hang of actually using them.

Here are some examples of good calls to action:

- text me "HIRING GUIDE" for my FREE HIRING GUIDE at 310-388-4588
- DM me "I'M READY" to schedule a FREE CALL with one of my advisors
- comment "6-FIGURES" if you want to hit 6-figures this year.
- share this if it resonates!
- go to the link in my bio to find out more!

Yes, those are all CTAs that I use! Find what works for you and make sure you use them!
